Arda Güler: Even better than expected
When Arda Güler signed for Real Madrid, the general consensus around him was that he was a precocious talent who could blossom into a star in the future. A technical wizard, Güler’s ability in tight-spaces, passing and set-piece technique, all were seen as truly special for someone of his age, and that these skill in tandem with other ones would be developed over the course of a few years, and he would make his way into the starting XI. With these ideas in mind, fans were excited to watch the Turkish talent showcase his abilities, but for half the season, we were deprived of this by a series of unfortunate injuries. Without really getting to watch Güler play outside of training clips, a real judgement couldn’t be made on how good he really was.
Now, all of that has changed. Once he got back to fitness and Carlo Ancelotti deemed him ready to play, Arda lit up LaLiga. In just 10 appearances (4 starts), amassing a total of 440 minutes, Arda Güler scored 6 goals. From just 15 shots in total, Güler found the net 6 times. And these were not just goals, these were goals that were accompanied by fantastic overall performances, such as this one against Villarreal:

Güler, in his limited minutes, showed the world why Real Madrid were so eager to nab him from right under the noses of Barcelona. A mercurial talent who shows glimpses of the likes of Isco, and even Messi stylistically, Güler has been even better than anyone expected. His ball striking at this age is truly unbelievable. His crossing ability is already one of the best in the squad, while his shooting technique is up there as well. This has been further showcased in Euro 2024, where Güler has already scored one of the goals of the tournament, a beautiful curler from 25 yards out against Georgia, while also creating 2 goals from fantastic set pieces against Austria in the round of 16. The first, a curling corner that Austria couldn’t clear that lead to a goal, and the second, a pinpoint corner to the head of Demiral. This assist too was accompanied by a fantastic overall performance, that showed what Arda truly excels at.

A technical master, Arda can escape from even the tightest of situations with ease. His dribbling ability is truly a sight to behold, with a languid, agile style that combines body feints and sharp turns, Arda’s style is reminiscent of the way small Spanish playmakers dribble, albeit with more speed. He doesn’t only escape pressure, but also actively carries the ball forward and beats his man to create danger. On top of all this, his crossing and shooting abilities are similarly special, with that curling technique already proving to be a very difficult task for any defense to deal with.
Another aspect of Güler’s game that people most probably did not expect is his confidence. Right out the bat, Güler has shown that he is not afraid of trying the outlandish. For both club and country, Güler has tried shots from around the halfway mark when he spotted the keeper off his line, and for Madrid he almost scored it as well. For both club and country, he has already undertaken set-piece duty, and he hasn’t been taking only corners as well. He has taken multiple free-kicks from goal scoring distances, and has displayed the talent that will warrant continued set-piece responsibilities.
Arda Güler in his limited time on the pitch has already made it clear that he is a remarkable talent. A versatile playmaker who can play as a winger, 10, or 8/10 hybrid, Arda has all the makings of a true superstar. While everyone expected him to shine, the timeline with which people mapped out his development could very well be proven to be well off the mark. Based on his performances so far, Arda’s transition from prodigal talent on the fringes of the squad to a regular contributor could come far sooner than expected. Joselu and Kroos’ departures, and the possible departure of Dani Ceballos means there are three more slots minutes wise that Arda could get, and Real Madrid playing in 7 competitions next season means that there will be plenty of gametime to go around. Recent reports have also suggested that Arda will have a much bigger role next season, and the club are very impressed with him so far. This increase in playtime will also come in multiple positions, as reports have indicated that the club sees him both as an attacker and as a midfielder. A creative presence from anywhere, Arda will prove to be an invaluable weapon for the club. Arda Güler has been better than anyone expected, and his role as a key part of the Real Madrid squad may also come sooner than anyone ever expected.
