Toni Kroos and Germany: The return of a legend.
After months of speculation, on the 22nd of February 2024, Toni Kroos announced that he would be ending his international retirement and return to action for his national team. Almost exactly a month later, Toni Kroos took to the field again for Germany for the first time in 3 years. 7 seconds later, he provided the assist for Florian Wirtz’s opening goal. Returning after 3 years, playing against the World Cup finalists from 2 years ago, the consensus best national team in the world in France, you couldn’t have thought of a better return to the national team set-up, but for a legend of the sport like Toni Kroos, it was nothing out of the ordinary.

Following the masterful performance in which he reminded everyone what Germany has been missing these last few years, this is what his coach Julian Nagelsmann had to say about him and his performance:
With such a statement performance, Kroos reminded everybody of what they already knew: that he is still one of the, if not the outright best, midfielders in the world. Producing a game high number of passes, with the highest pass accuracy, while also producing an assist and winning all of his tackles, Kroos showed that all of the criticism dished out at him following his retirement in 2021 was disingenuous and flat out wrong. In a game in which multiple stars of the present and future took to the pitch, stars such as goalscorer Florian Wirtz, Bayern Munich wonderkid Jamal Musiala, and Kroos’ club teammates Aurelien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga, Toni Kroos showed that his class is still unmatched. After a tumultuous few years in which Germany have seen their ranking on FIFA’s national men’s teams rankings plummet down to 16th, Toni Kroos showed with his performance that things will turn around soon. Arguably the best midfielder in the world, Kroos’ return has already begun to change the look of the team, the way they play, and eventually their goals for the summer.
Kroos, even on his worst day, will still give you a performance that most would fail to replicate on their good days. In a Germany team that is currently lacking a clear identity and is attempting to hand over the reins from veterans like Muller, Kroos and Gundogan to a budding group of youngsters lead by the likes of Wirtz and Musiala, having the importance of the impact Kroos brings with his return cannot overstated. On the pitch, Kroos can and will dominate every midfield battle. A player who never loses the ball, is always progressing it with pinpoint accuracy, a player who has mastered every passing technique in the book and has the intelligence to know when to choose a certain type of pass, having Kroos at the heart of midfield makes Germany a far more secure team, and a team that has the ultimate press-breaking tool in their locker. In addition to this, Germany gets a player who has mastered the art of controlling a game’s tempo like no one else. It doesn’t matter what the opposition throws at him, Kroos will be able to adjust and take control of the game for his team, adjusting the tempo and speed of the game to suit his team’s strengths and hide their weaknesses. With other elite midfield talent around him, such as Gundogan, Muller, Kimmich, Rudiger, and Musiala, Kroos will be at the center of one of the best national teams in the world, and the way he plays will give the team an on-pitch identity that they have sorely lacked in recent years.
Kroos’ impact also extends off the pitch, for both his teams and his fans. Despite the criticism his initial retirement brought about, the fans never stopped their affection for the player, which was highlighted by this:
Kroos’ return to the set-up means a 5-time UCL and 1 time World Cup winner is back in the squad. His return means that a player who once claimed that he was not nervous for Champions League finals because “it’s just football” is back in the team. The experience and calmness that Kroos will bring to his team, and the optimism he will bring for his fans, is a huge factor that cannot be overlooked when considering his return. A natural leader in the dressing room and the pitch, and a player with a CV better than 99% of players in history, Kroos’ return could singlehandedly turn around Germany’s fortunes.
Kroos returning to the national team set-up has massive implications that can and will change the way Germany play and their aims for the summer. Whatever their record may be in recent years, Kroos is a player so great that all of that can be changed simply with his inclusion in the team now. An all-time legend who has a propensity to produce his best in the toughest, most high-profile situations, Kroos coming back means Germany are once again a team to be avoided, and one that could go very deep in the Euros this summer.
